LOS ANGELES, California – Since June 2010, The Tryall Club, Montego Bay, Jamaica has been a Green Globe Certified resort and ranks among the top Green Globe members in the Caribbean with a rating of 82%.

Shaku Ramcharan is the Environmental and Conservation Manager at The Tryall Club and oversees the wealth of activities that sustain their resort’s operations and at the same time give back to the community and destination.

The Sustainability Plan for Tryall has seen progress in the implementation of carbon emission monitoring and the achievement of a long-term environmental plan to address climate change and low bio-diversity.

In 2014-15, Tryall established a National Forest Reserve of 523 acres, while also completing extensive conservation work on a nineteenth century national heritage site. Located in the resort grounds the heritage site includes the remnants of a sugar works with a huge cast-iron water wheel, old cast-iron boiler and a beautiful brick chimney

In addition to preserving and resorting their local environment, Shaku is proud of the resorts ongoing community work, explaining, โ€œOur community outreach arms, The Tryall Fund and The Tryall Sports Club, have continued to excel in building a new home for an elderly parishioner as well as refurbishing the local post office and doing coastal clean-ups along 20 miles of shoreline. Our outreach arms also pay tuition and costs for 43 students to continue their education, some up to doctoral levels.โ€

Within the Caribbean region, the Tryall Club was selected to be part of the CHENACT Energy Efficiency Project and nominated by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) to undergo a complete energy efficiency audit.

Out of this program Tryall implemented a plan to install more efficient equipment such as LED bulbs and inverter appliances (air conditioners and pool pumps with energy saving variable speed technology). In addition a Titanium heat recovery system was implemented to heat swimming pools, along with additional and improved monitoring systems installed such an EnviR, Energy Eye and Nest monitors.

Today twenty four percent of the villas have solar thermal generation and a further nine percent are solar energy producers. More than a quarter of all the villas have also been refitted with energy saving devices such as LED lighting, energy monitors and control systems.

Shaku is pleased to note that, “With more conservation and training and awareness the guest night to kWh usage has been steadily declining over the past three years in line with our Green Globe certification and our Sustainability Plan.”
