PERTH, Australia – Tourism bodies have warned there could be a hotel room glut in Perth if the State Government does not promote the city to fill 1850 new rooms in the pipeline.
The caution came after Planning Minister John Day said yesterday hotel giant Minor International would build a two-tower development next to Perth Arena as part of the Perth City Link project.
One tower will feature a 250-room, 4 1/2 star AVANI hotel and the other 200 serviced apartments. The project, expected to begin construction late next year and open in late 2017, includes a rooftop bar and a public plaza with alfresco dining, art and grassed areas.
Mr Day said it would also bring about $110 million in investment to WA and create up to 900 construction and tourism jobs.
Tourism Council WA chief executive Evan Hall said it was imperative the Government invested in promoting Perth as a destination to attract visitors to the 1850 hotel rooms to be built in Perth in the next few years.
Australian Hotels Association WA chief executive Bradley Woods said promotion was key.
“If we don’t meet the new hotel builds with an effective and successful destination marketing boost that drives visitation, we will end up with a glut of hotel rooms,” he said.
