SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The Deputy Director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC), Luis D. Muñiz Martínez, announced today that the number of cruise visitors to the island reached another record high, with 17,847 passengers. Six cruise ships arrived today to the docks of Old San Juan. This new figure surpasses the previous records on Dec. 31, 2014 with 15,776 passengers, Jan. 8, 2015 with 16,712 passengers and Feb. 4, 2015 with 16,395 passengers.

“The arrival of the 17,847 cruise passengers represents an economic impact of about $2 million to the economy of Puerto Rico. In the past on Jan. 8 and Feb. 4, we had six cruisers visit with 16,712 and 16,395 passengers respectively, an amount that will be surpassed today,” said Muniz Martinez. “Our efforts to promote the island as a cruise destination continue to make Puerto Rico the five-star destination of choice in the region,” added Deputy Executive Director of PRTC.

Meanwhile, the Executive Director of the Port Authority, Colberg Ingrid Rodriguez said, “The record of cruise passengers reached in the Port of San Juan reflects the results we are accomplishing to boost economic development through the maritime ports of the country. This effort to enhance our first seaport has been fostered by the incentives we have granted to attract cruise in low season; Pan American improvements to Pier 1, which made possible the arrival of Disney cruises, and the expansion of Pier 3, which favored the arrival of Quantum of the Seas. Definitely, we have returned trust to the Port of San Juan’s cruise industry, projecting an even greater increase in this important sector over the next years,” said Rodriguez, who was satisfied with the interagency work accomplished in favor of local tourism.

From 6 a.m. through noon, the cruises Quantum of the Seas, Disney Fantasy, MSC Divina, Carnival Glory, Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam docked at the piers. These six cruisers are added to the Norwegian Gem, Summit, Jewel of the Seas, Carnival Valor, Adventure of the Seas, Club Med 2, Celebration Reflectio, Caribbean Fantasy, Stad Amsterdam, Carnival Sunshine and Westerndam which visited the Port of San Juan since last Saturday. On Thursday and Friday, the Riviera, Carnival Liberty, Silver Cloud and Caribbean Fantasy cruise ships will arrive for a total of 19 boats this week.
