SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – A 40-year-old woman from the United States identified as Amanda Hellman drowned in a kayaking accident on the Sarapiquí River Thursday, the Costa Rican Red Cross confirmed to The Tico Times.

The accident happened near La Virgen de Sarapiquí, 100 kilometers north of the Costa Rican capital, where Hellman was kayaking with her husband, reported La Nación. The U.S. tourist was reportedly stuck in branches from a fallen tree in the river and drowned.
