Travelocity’s Window Seat ( http://windowseat.travelocity.com), a blog for every traveler, has honed in on everyone’s favorite word: free.

More specifically, “Five Fall Travel Freebies You Can’t Afford to Miss” by Window Seat contributor Genevieve Shaw Brown highlights several avenues for savvy travelers to take as they look to get the most value from their fall getaways. Brown’s extensive research uncovered resorts, cruise lines, hotels and rental car companies all offering a variety of perks including free airfare, room nights and upgrades.

“Despite the grim picture that has been painted regarding fall travel, there are still a number of deals and promotions that savvy travelers can cash in on,” Brown said. “With just a little bit of flexibility and creativity, that dream vacation is easily within reach right now.”

Free Airfare

All-inclusive Sandals Resorts “Love is in the Air” deal is good for bookings made by October 23, 2008 and credits guests up to $1,100 to offset the cost of air travel with a minimum three-night stay.

Free Cruise Upgrades

When you book a cruise on NCL before October 12, future sailings are eligible for free stateroom upgrades. Other cruise lines offer onboard ship credit, making it possible for you to sip a few of those poolside cocktails after all.

Free Checked Bags

Delta Airlines, Midwest, JetBlue and most international carriers have held off on the first-checked bag fee, a savings that can add up to $50 over flying on another carrier.

Free Days on Car Rentals

Hertz offers a free weekend day with your three-day car rental through December 15, while Alamo offers free upgrades through December 31. If you’re traveling to Latin America or the Caribbean, Europcar offers a seven-day rental for the price of five when you book before September 30. All require an advance reservation.

Free Hotel Nights

There are several properties offering free room nights with a certain length of stay. In the Caribbean, there are free night offers in Turks and Caicos at The Somerset on Grace Bay, Sands at Grace Bay and at the Reef Residences; in Aruba, the Aruba Marriott Resort and Stellaris Casino as well as the Renaissance Aruba Resort and Casino have similar promotions.
