The twentieth edition of the “Megavalanche,” a downhill mountain biking event of global reputation held on Reunion Island, will this year take place on November 29 and 30. With double Olympic champion Julien Absalon already confirmed as one of the contestants, this will give a prime opportunity to measure up to the best of the best on one of the most challenging downhill mountain bike events held, and route “Maido” clearly is the one of the four available routes to bring the best out of the champion and the many pretenders to his throne.

This year’s Megavalanche has been organized under the spirit of homecoming and innovation. Some 400 participants have already registered, and this will be the last chance to make up one’s mind and travel to Reunion Island and become part of this adventure sporting event which is celebrating its 20th edition, the first one having been organized way back in 1995.

Besides Julien Absalon, three-time winner of the St. Paul Megavalance, Remy Absalon, will be at this year’s Megavalanche, and Alpe d’ Huez’ Pierre Charles Georges take part, along with other greats of the sport like Thibaut Ruffin and Martyn Brookes. Local boy Florent Payet, who came fifth overall last year, will also give it another go aiming to finish his races in a better position, not an easy task considering the international competition.

As a special event, a race for children is planned on the morning of November 30 when the main races come to a conclusion at the very site of the inaugural 1995 event.

With such adventure sporting events, Reunion Island Tourism (IRT) continues to ensure that the island remains a top destination for adventure travelers from around the world, who come not only for the beaches but for the range of other activities the island offers to them for active vacations.
