In Taiwan, the Taipei Metro carried more than 345,000 passengers on its new Songshan Line Saturday, the first day of its operation, the Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation (TRTC) said Sunday.

There are eight stations on the 8.5-kilometer-long Songshan Line, from Ximen in the old downtown to the eastern end of Songshan, where passengers can transfer to nationwide rail services.

The new line started its service at 6 a.m. Saturday, operating free of charge or with reduced tariffs for EasyCard holders who get in or out of the eight stations for a month. About 725,000 riders enjoyed the reduction service on that day, according to the TRTC.

The 15-minute ride is an extension of the Xindian Line, from Xindian District in New Taipei, south of Taipei City.

The Metro provided 2.125 million passenger trips on its 5-route, 134.6-kilometer-long operation on Saturday, up by about 205,000 rides on Saturdays in October, the TRTC stated.
