Rome opens monuments to tourists

Rome is offering nighttime visits to the Colosseum this summer and is temporarily opening some ancient monuments that usually are closed to visitors.

Starting this weekend, visitors will have evening access to parts of the Colosseum. Daytime visits will be offered at the ancient House of Livia, on the Palatine Hill, known for the wall paintings that adorned the home attributed to the wife of Rome's first emperor, Augustus.

Also open for public tours are the 2nd-century B.C. House of the Griffins, the most ancient house discovered on the city's Palatine Hill, and the recently restored Temple of Romulus.
