Spending on travel and tourism nationwide fell at an annual rate of 5.9 percent in the first quarter, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis says.

Leading the decline was passenger air transportation (down 28.7 percent) and traveler accommodations (down 15.1 percent), according to the report.

Spending on domestic flights fell for the sixth consecutive quarter. However, spending on international flights rose 10.5 percent.

Spending on accommodations fell 18.6 percent in the first quarter.

Despite reduced room rates, the hotel industry also continued to experience declining demand.
