WASHINGTON — The chairman of the Senate's aviation panel is asking a government watchdog to investigate safety enforcement at regional airlines.

Sen. Byron Dorgan said in a letter Tuesday to the Transportation Department's inspector general that the circumstances of the crash of Continental Connection Flight 3407 near Buffalo in February raise questions about enforcement of pilot training and crew rest regulations.

The North Dakota Democrat said regulations must be paired with vigorous oversight by the Federal Aviation Administration to have a credible effect.

A National Transportation Safety Board hearing last week presented testimony suggesting that flaws in pilot hiring and training, as well as fatigue, may have contributed to the crash.
