World tourism tumbles

May 17, 2009

World tourism tumbled by almost 8 percent early this year because of the global economic crisis, according to the World Tourism Organization.

About 117 million international tourist arrivals were registered worldwide in January and February, 7.7 percent fewer than for the same months of 2008. And that's before the swine flu hit, drastically cutting travel to Mexico. Europe was the hardest-hit region, suffering a decline of 8.4 percent while North America dropped 3.4 percent.
