American Airlines has announced that its frequent-flyers would now be able to redeem one-way flights for half the miles of a round-trip award.

In the past, members of American’s AAdvantage who only wanted to fly one-way had to claim the full amount of miles that a round-trip would require.

American is now also allowing its frequent flyers to combine different types of awards on a single itinerary.

The airline has completely overhauled its frequent flyer programme in an effort to boost travel demand and give customers more options.
Earlier this month, American Airlines said its system traffic fell 4.7 percent in April.

A spokesman for UAL Corp’s United Airlines said his company was studying American's frequent-flyer plan changes.
