The Federal Government will create a national accreditation system for tourism operators to discourage unethical practices.

Tourism Minister Martin Ferguson says the industry has been considering the move, which was recommended in a report five years ago, for some time.

Mr Ferguson says the proposal will be considered at a meeting with state and territory tourism ministers in March.

He says the system of nationally recognised standards will not not aim to be punitive.

"It's not a question of new penalties and regulations," he said.

"It's a question of sitting down with industry and putting in place a process which ensures they compete to be accredited in the knowledge that it's what consumers want - an indication of a good quality service at a reasonable price."
