In recognition of the Texas travel industry and its significant contribution to the Texas economy, Governor Rick Perry has proclaimed May 9-17, 2009 Texas Travel and Tourism Week. Texas Travel and Tourism Week coincides with National Travel and Tourism Week in which cities, states, and travel-related businesses nationwide celebrate the value and economic impact of travel and tourism.

Texas’ number one ambassador, First Lady Anita Perry, is also dedicated to promoting Texas tourism and economic development. Through her work, the Lone Star State continues to be one of the top three travel destinations in the US.

“Texas Travel and Tourism Week is an excellent time to highlight the important economic impact of the Texas travel and tourism industry on our state,” said First Lady Anita Perry, “Travel and tourism in the Lone Star State enriches the lives of Texans in so many ways. I encourage Texans to get out and explore our state and to enjoy all that Texas offers.”

Both Texans and non-Texans alike are encouraged to explore the Lone Star State’s diversity, from its bustling big cities to its charming small towns. From the top of the Panhandle Plains to the tip of south Texas and from the piney woods of east Texas to the mountains of the Big Bend region, unique historical and cultural attractions and scenic natural wonders await travelers. Along the Texas Gulf Coast, a variety of destinations offer fun in the sun, water sports, cultural and historical experiences, dining, and entertainment. Throughout the state, travelers can also enjoy regional foods, vineyards, amusement parks, museums, music, shopping, golf – and other sports, as well as a host of outdoor adventures.

Tourism has long been recognized as a powerful economic development tool in Texas, generating revenue and jobs. In 2007, travelers generated nearly US$57 billion in direct travel spending in the state, and the travel industry employed 534,000 Texans. Travel expenditures generated US$2.8 billion in state taxes and US$994 million in local taxes. Texas is also one of the most visited states in the United States.

Cities throughout the Lone Star State are taking this opportunity to recognize the importance of travel and tourism in their communities by hosting celebratory activities and recognition ceremonies during Texas Travel and Tourism Week.
