Combatting The Growing Scourge Of Criminal Piracy
Emergency international anti-piracy summit to be hosted in Cairo, Egypt
Due to the recent spiking violent piracy in the Gulf of Aden and surrounding areas with over 20 ships and more than 200 people currently being held by pirates, an emergency summit has been organized through contacts with the government of Egypt, Somalia, Djibouti, Yemen, Jordan, Panama, Malaysia, international agencies, industry leaders, and others to bring together an unprecedented group of top-level government and private sector decision makers and experts from key government agencies, which will include major shipping, insurance, security, and policy experts to present "immediate short-term solutions," as well as long-term policy models, to combat the growing scourge of criminal piracy in the world's most vital trade routes and waterways.
Mr. William "Bo" Fielding, managing director of Phoenix Intelligence Support Services, Inc., anti-piracy unit, stated that: "This international conference will bring together for the first time key decision makers and experts with real solutions that will be reflected on the sea, as well as on the ground, within a very short period of time, rather than just a discussion forum, on this important issue."
Delegates and invited guests include members of the Unites States Central Command (CENTCOM), CT151, AFRICOM, SOMICOM, ENIGMA, US State Department, African Union, Suez Canal Authorities, Panama Canal and Malaysian Authorities, Special Operations Commanders or their representatives from Yemen, Djibouti, Jordan, USA, Spain, France, Germany and other EU member countries, counter-terrorism experts, Lloyds and other major Insurance Underwriters, Secretary General of Greek Arab Affairs Ambassador Moheb El Samara (Egypt), major shipping companies, members of the Somali transitional government, and many other experts and dignitaries from Egypt, Asia, Middle East, and Africa.
An estimated 300 delegates worldwide are expected to attend the summit, and heavy press coverage is expected leading up to and during the event. The Cairo International Anti Piracy Summit will be hosted on May 27, 2009, with extended working groups on May 28-29, 2009 at the five-star Intercontinental Hotel City Stars located in Nasr City, Cairo, Egypt.
