Aussie racism row puts off tourists

Aussie racism row puts off tourists

Jan 16, 2008

Australian tourism operators have warned that the country's share of the increasingly lucrative Indian tourist market will drop after the recent Test cricket fracas.

The warning has prompted the Queensland government to direct a trade mission to India to try to smooth ruffled feathers.

Travel Impact, a Bangkok-based travel news service, says the row between the Indian and Australian teams will deter Indians from visiting Australia.

''That many among the Indian travelling public will think twice about going to Australia is a certainty,'' it says on its website.

The Indian tourist market in Australia is growing rapidly, with 90,300 Indians visiting in the year to last September, up 39 percent in two years.

Queensland Tourism Minister Desley Boyle said she had instructed a state trade mission to visit India for meetings with 600 Indian travel industry representatives.
