GAUHATI, India - A 60-year-old Dutch tourist has been trampled to death by a wild elephant at a national park, an Indian official said Tuesday.

S.N. Buragohain, director of northeastern Kaziranga National Park, said the victim was part of a group looking for birds and rare monkeys when they saw a wild male elephant Tuesday morning.

He said eight other tourists ran for safety, but the Dutch man tripped and was trampled to death.

The group was accompanied by a guide and armed guards who opened fire on the elephant.

Buragohain said it wasn't immediately clear if the elephant was wounded.

The victim has been identified as Robert Goldbach.

Kaziranga, in the northeastern state of Assam, is famous for its rare one-horned rhinoceroses.
