Four in 10 travellers say nudist beaches would boost tourism numbers to Australia.

A survey of 1250 people by travel website totaltravel.com asked whether more nude sunbathing beaches should be allowed around the country to boost tourism.

More than 40 per cent were happy for beachgoers to strip, believing nudity was natural.

But 33 per cent said nude sunbathing was distasteful and should be banned.

A quarter said they did not care either way.

The website's spokesman, Paul Fisher, said many in favour of the move believed appropriate signage would have to clearly mark such beaches.

He said those against it said they had no desire to see other people's "wobbly bits".
