Official: Labor unrest will hurt Bermuda tourism

By AP | Apr 05, 2009

A government official says a work slowdown by a bus operators' union will hobble the British territory's hospitality industry just as the global slowdown takes a big bite out of tourism.

Larry Jacobs is the transportation chief for the tourism ministry. He says a work-to-rule protest by bus drivers will prevent most sightseeing tours in the Atlantic island, where the cruise ship season starts April 10.

Jacobs said Sunday that the labor unrest "will impact the number of cruise visitors wishing to go on sightseeing tours and also hotel visitors and residents wishing to charter."

The protest began in early February over safety concerns about roadways around Hamilton's bus terminal. Union officials could not immediately be reached Sunday.
