Belize to host International Conference on Responsible Tourism in Destinations

Belize will be hosting the 3rd International Conference on Responsible Tourism (ICRT) in Destinations to be held from May 18-21, 2009. The conference will be held in Belmopan City, the capital of Belize, where ICRT members from all over the world will gather with representation from as far as The Gambia, India, and South Africa.

The 3rd International Conference on Responsible Tourism in Destinations is being held in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, the Belize Tourism Board, and various industry stakeholders. The Hon. Manual Heredia, Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation and Professor Harold Goodwin of the ICRT at Leeds Metropolitan University in UK, will share co-chair responsibilities for the conference.

The agenda for the conference will focus on issues affecting tourism development in Belize, the wider Caribbean, and Central American regions and will include issues such as:

- Tourism and Local Economic Development
- Impacts of Tourism on the Marine and Coastal Zone in Belize and around the world
- Impacts of Cruise Tourism in Belize and around the world
- Second homes, condominiums and their impact on local communities

The ICRT-Belize is a not-for-profit organization established in April 2008. It provides policy advice, research, and consultation on developing responsible tourism in Belize, the Caribbean, and Central America. The objective of ICRT members is to work with the private sector, government, and local communities to achieve and maintain sustainable tourism, thereby enhancing the destinations for visitors and residents alike.
