COLOMBO, Sri Lanka - Repeated wasp attacks on tourists have prompted Sri Lankan officials to close the country's famous Sigiriya rock fortress.

Colombo Page reported Monday that three days of attacks in the past week had sent several dozen people to hospitals for treatment of stings. The air force and police even had to evacuate some visitors stranded on the top.

Similar attacks have occurred the past two years in May.

Officials said they will try to figure out a way to remove the numerous wasp nests from their craggy locations without using chemicals that could damage the world famous paintings on the site's rock wall, the newspaper said.

Visitors have been instructed to be quiet so as not to disturb the colonies but that effort has been unsuccessful, particularly with school children, Lanka Page reported.
