Two Mexican women and Norwegian tourist in stable condition

Three wounded when gunmen open fire in Mexican tourist town

By eTN Staff Writer | Mar 20, 2009

Two gunmen with automatic rifles opened fire in the main square of the Mexican tourist town of Taxco yesterday. Two Mexican women and a female Norwegian tourist were wounded.

The Guerrero State Public Security agency said the armed men grabbed a man from the crowd as the city's mayor launched Thursday's mid-day Red Cross charity event in front of the famed Santa Prisca church.

The attackers fled while firing wild gunshot bursts from an automatic rifle, causing minor wounds to three female bystanders. Police said they do not know who the gunmen seized and are hunting for the attackers.

A Red Cross official said the three women injured were taken to a hospital and were in stable condition. The Red Cross event was suspended.

Taxco is a mining town in the mountains south of Mexico City that is famed for jewelry and colorful scenery.
