Carnival announced today that its 2010 Alaska cruises will sail roundtrip from Seattle -- a new homeport for the cruise line. Currently, Carnival Spirit sails one-way voyages between Vancouver and Whittier.

Carnival Spirit will once again spend the summer months in Alaska in 2010, but will sport a brand-new seven-night roundtrip Seattle itinerary. The ship will depart on Tuesdays and call in Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and Victoria. The itinerary also includes scenic cruising in Tracy Arm. The current seven-night itinerary is similar, but features Sitka instead of Victoria, and offers scenic tours of College Fjord rather than Tracy Arm.

The new itinerary has two obvious benefits. The first is the convenience of the new Seattle homeport for Americans, who can book affordable roundtrip flights to Seattle, rather than arranging more complicated and often expensive one-way flights into Vancouver and out of Whittier (or vice versa). It's also a drive-to port for West Coast residents. Second, as industry news publication cruise-community.com points out, Tuesday is not a common departure day for cruise ships, so travelers should experience less crowded ports.

Carnival's Alaska season will run from May 11 through August 31, 2010. The line will also offer a six-night Inside Passage cruise from Vancouver to Seattle on May 5, 2010, at the beginning of the season, and a seven-night Glacier Bay cruise from Seattle to Vancouver on September 7, 2010, at the end.
