A German tourist is expected to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday after child pornography was allegedly found on his portable hard drive.

Customs officers searched the 22-year-old man’s luggage on arrival at Melbourne Airport on Sunday, allegedly discovering more than 1,000 images and videos of children engaged in sex acts on the hard drive.

The man was searched after a flight from Germany, via Shanghai.

He was arrested and charged with importing prohibited goods and refused bail, before being ordered to appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday to face the charges.

Customs national manager of investigations Richard Janeczko (Janeczko) said several passengers had been detected bringing child pornography into Australia recently.

“Travellers should be aware that Customs officers are on the lookout for pornography breaching Customs regulations,” he said.

“Any material suspected of containing child pornography or other abhorrent acts will be seized and investigated.

“Individuals could face serious criminal code penalties, including a fine of up to $275,000 and/or 10 years in jail.”
