Lufthansa to resume flights to Munich from April
Lufthansa announced that it will resume flights on the Tel Aviv and Munich route from April 26. There will be four weekly flights on the wide-bodied Airbus A340-330 which can carry 221 passengers. In total there will be 18 Lufthansa flights a week between Germany and Israel.
Lufthansa has advised that it is resuming flights from Tel Aviv to Munich after a six-year break. The flight will depart on Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Flight number LH688 departs Munich at 09:45 CET, arriving in Tel Aviv at 14:20. The return flight, LH689 departs Tel Aviv at 15:45 arriving in Munich at 18:45 CET.
Economy class passengers will be able to enjoy Lufthansa’s new in-flight personal entertainment system, while business class travelers will benefit from the comfort of the two meter bed seats.
According to Ofer Kisch, general manager of Lufthansa in Israel, the company sees Israel as one of their most important destinations because of the movement of pilgrims to the Holy Land from Germany and Europe. This is likely to grow in the coming months ahead of the planned visit of Pope Benedict in May. Kisch added that this was significant for the tourism industry in Israel.
The new aviation agreement signed between Israel to Germany last month enables both countries to operate up to 30 weekly scheduled flights compared to 18 flights until now. The new agreement also allows for flights to be operated to new destinations in Germany.
Additionally, for the first time, regular cargo flights will operate between the countries. At the beginning both sides will be allowed to operate up to seven cargo flights a week.
In response to the renewal of the flights, El Al announced the decision was in contrast to earlier declaration from Ministry of Transportation and that the Israel Aviation Authority had decided not to allow equal competition for Israeli companies.
