Egypt's prosecutor orders to detain attacker of US tourist in Cairo
CAIRO - The Egyptian prosecution ordered on Saturday to detain an Egyptian who attacked a U.S. tourist on Friday near the site of a bombing attack a few days ago that killed a French tourist.
Abdel Rahman Salah Taher Mohammed, 46, is facing charges of carrying a weapon without a permit and harming civilians, said the Egyptian MENA news agency.
On Friday, Mohammed knifed an American teacher, who was slightly hurt in the face, in Cairo's downtown district of El-Azhar, just meters away from the spot of the explosion on Sunday that killed a French teenager and wounded more than 20 others in the famed Khan al-Khalili bazaar.
The U.S. citizen, a teacher at the American school in the northern Egyptian city of Alexandria, was visiting Cairo with his wife when he was attacked on Friday.
Initial investigations showed that Mohammed, who was mentally ill, once was held in a mental hospital in 2000 for attacking tourists and policemen.
Mohammed just left the hospital several months ago after his condition had improved, said MENA, adding he will be sent to mental hospital again for more examinations and investigation.
