American Airlines partners with EPA
American Airlines Inc. has committed to implementing environmentally conscious business practices by partnering with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Leaders program.
Fort Worth-based American Airlines, a subsidiary of AMR Corp., said it is the first major passenger airline to partner with the EPA.
As a member of Climate Leaders, American will work with the EPA on developing business strategies that attempt to curb environmental impacts such as extensive emissions of greenhouse gases. American says any greenhouse gas reduction initiatives established within the company will be designed to create results within the next five to 10 years, with the EPA monitoring progress.
American has set the goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent within the next 16 years.
Thus far, American says it has focused on reducing its carbon footprint by slashing fuel consumption on an annual basis, replacing older MD-80 aircraft with more energy-efficient Boeing 737-800 jets and reducing electricity usage by maintaining energy-efficient office temperatures, re-fitting lights and utilizing green-friendly light bulbs.
