Etihad Aviation Group (EAG) held its fifth annual ‘Walk for a Cause’ event at Um Al Emarat Park on Friday, 17 March 2017 under the patronage of HH Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan bin Mohamed Al Nahyan, wife of HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Ruler’s Representative in the Western Region of the UAE. The event aimed to mark the empowerment of women in the UAE and abroad.

Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan bin Mohamed Al Nahyan, Chairwoman of the Women and Health Alliance International (WAHA), said: “The UAE’s leadership attaches special importance to the empowerment of women, recognising their contribution to the development of the UAE. We are glad that the fun walk at Um Al Emarat Park falls between celebrating International Women’s Day and the International Day of Happiness.”

Her Highness Sheikha Shamsa Al Nahyan added: “Today, I would like to congratulate women, Emirati citizens and all residents living in the UAE as we bear witness to this impressive socio-economic growth. I firmly believe there is a link between women’s maternal instinct, giving and true internal happiness, which together form a powerful bond throughout the country.”

The fun walk was open to all female residents and children in the UAE and is part of EAG’s strategy to promote education, access to learning and the wellbeing of children, both in the UAE and beyond. More than 600 women and children participated in the event, which also included wellness screening, a bazaar, games and live entertainment.

Khaled Al Mehairbi, Etihad Airways’ Senior Vice President at Abu Dhabi Airport, said: “As the UAE flag carrier, we are at the heart of the community, and we feel strongly about giving back to those in need.”

Mr Al Mehairbi, who also serves as the Chairman of Etihad Airways’ Sports and Social Committee, added : “I would like to extend our appreciation to Her Highness Shamsa Bint Hamdan Bint Mohamed Al Nahyan for her generous initiative in hosting this walk to enhance the lives of the schoolgirls we are supporting in Indonesia after similar projects in Kenya, India, Nepal and Morocco. Along with supporting Syrian refugees in Jordan and Serbia, EAG has always been generous in supporting global education and so far more than 18,000 students have benefitted directly from the ‘Walk for a Cause’ since its launch in 2013.”

The walk was held in collaboration with Umm Al Emarat Park, Emirates Red Crescent, Al Ain Water, SEHA, Abu Dhabi Police, Patchi, Canon, Grace Conservations, Specialized Beauty Clinic, United Printing & Publishing and EAG’s media partner, Abu Dhabi Media.

“We hope that by bringing people together like this, we will help to raise awareness and vital funds for a very deserving cause, and put a smile on the faces of children worldwide,” Mr Al Mehairbi concluded.
