93 people killed in Madagascar president and mayor clash
At least 25 people were killed Sunday, while dozens others were injured in the violence that erupted in Madagascar’s capital city of Antananarivo.
United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, who is condemning the violence, on Sunday urged all parties to resolve their differences peacefully.
"He deplores the violence and lack of restraint on all sides that led to this tragedy," spokesperson for the UN secretary general said in statement.
"The secretary-general calls upon all concerned parties to resolve their differences through peaceful and democratic means and through the exercise of responsible leadership," the statement added.
The United Nations estimates that prior to Saturday's events, at least 68 people died in riots that erupted a week ago amid a dispute between Malagasy President Marc Ravalomanana and Anatananarivo Mayor Andry Rajoelina.
In the wake of the crisis, Mr. Ban dispatched senior United Nations political aide Haile Menkerios to assess the situation in the country and explore what the world body could do to help avert further violence and contribute towards peace and stability, according to the UN.
Mr. Menkerios is scheduled to meet with government officials and others concerned during his February 7 to 10 visit.
The UN secretary-general urged the Malagasy authorities to urgently initiate a fair process by which those responsible for the violence will be brought to justice.
"The secretary-general stands ready to provide all the necessary support for the rapid and peaceful resolution of this crisis," according to Sunday's statement.
