Frankfurt Airport offers new services

Sunny greetings in the terminals, car racing and fitness games before departure, state-of-the-art workbenches, and relaxation in “Silent Chairs”: all this and more has become possible at Frankfurt

Sunny greetings in the terminals, car racing and fitness games before departure, state-of-the-art workbenches, and relaxation in “Silent Chairs”: all this and more has become possible at Frankfurt Airport in 2016.

The new services have been captured by video blogger and world traveler Marko Roth of Frankfurt, who has also personally tested several of them. His personal favorite is the Silent Chairs: “They are like the eye of the storm amid the airport’s hustle and bustle, letting you watch the action while chilling.” He was amazed by the practical winter coat service: “I’d never before been able to shed my heavy jacket and leave it safely stored when jetting off on a trip. Definitely a pleasant surprise.”

Silent Chairs, workbenches, and many other new features have been installed to enhance the passenger experience at Frankfurt Airport. Over the last 12 months, efforts have focused on providing more and better entertainment, relaxation and wayfinding. Altogether, a sum in the tens of millions of euros has been spent to make the terminals more attractive and respond to passengers’ increasing needs. Martina Pfeffer, in charge of terminal management, says: “Our guests don’t want to head straight for their planes and take off. They also want to feel good, be entertained, and take advantage of a wide range of services. So we’re working nonstop to enlarge our offering in response to their diverse and steadily growing expectations.”

Relaxation: Yoga Rooms and Silent Chairs

Downward-facing dog, cobra, and crow before departure: in January 2016 the airport inaugurated two fully equipped yoga rooms that passengers can use free of charge. They include monitor screens showing videos in which model Eva Padberg and narrator Ralf Bauer teach their favorite asanas.

Since the start of the year, passengers have also been able to spend time sitting comfortably in new arched Silent Chairs. These can also be used free and include a USB port, power sockets and a small table. Integrated speakers let them enjoy their own music.

Since March 2016, dancing, soccer and car racing games have also helped travelers pass the time in a free Gaming World featuring the latest products from Xbox One. They can choose between interactive games on wall monitors and controller-assisted games at gaming consoles.

Business travelers often have to get some work done while waiting in airports. And since this past spring, special workbenches have made it easier. These practical workplaces, equipped with power sockets and USB ports, are located along the wall-to-ceiling glazed exterior walls where they receive pleasant daylight while providing a nice view of the apron. Electronic devices can now also be charged at more than 8000 sockets around the terminals.

Since the summer, six lounge-like relax zones equipped with back-friendly recliners, club chairs, comfortable stools, and translucent partitions have provided greater privacy for passengers wishing to rest. There is also an attractive new waiting area in Terminal 2 featuring several green plants.

Wayfinding: Intermodal Displays and Multilingual Flight Information Boards

Work to renovate the arrivals level of Terminal 1 was completed in June. Now the entire area is free of obstacles and fully accessible with reduced traffic. Digital information displays help visitors and passengers find their way.

Since July, foreign travelers have also had an easier time obtaining important information at Frankfurt Airport. Besides German and English, the status of flights is now displayed in any of eight other languages, depending on the country served. Thanks to new multilingual flight information boards, our airport is one of the world’s first to inform passengers in their own languages.

In August, so-called “intermodal displays” were introduced to inform passengers about ways to continue their trips from Frankfurt Airport using ground transportation. These monitors list departures from the long-distance and regional train stations and the bus station, information on current road traffic conditions, and available car and bicycle sharing capacities.

Better Signage

The signs for services have also been vastly improved. For example, the signage in the check-in areas has been upgraded and new signs installed to help passengers find additional services faster and more easily.

As expressed by the slogan “Gute Reise! We make it happen”, the airport’s operator, Fraport, is consistently focused on passengers and meeting their individual needs. Based on this commitment, it continually introduces new services and facilities to help enhance the customer experience and raise satisfaction levels at Germany’s most important transportation hub.
