Mexico awards Mexicana concession for new airline

By AP | Feb 05, 2009

MEXICO CITY — Mexico's Communications and Transportation Department has awarded Grupo Mexicana a concession to operate a new domestic airline.

The department and Grupo Mexicana say in a joint statement that the new airline will start operations on March 15 and be called Mexicana Inter. It will start with a fleet of 13 Bombardier CRJ200 planes with a 50-passenger capacity each.

Grupo Mexicana director Manuel Borja said Wednesday the company invested $7 million to launch the new airline, which he said will create 500 new jobs.

Grupo Mexicana operates Mexicana airlines and Click Mexicana. The two airlines transported 11.7 million passengers in 2008.
