The first tourism Golden Week holiday in the Year of the Ox in celebration of the Spring Festival has just ended. Though most regions suffered from cold fronts, the Chinese people's enthusiasm for travel was not dampened. Ctrip.com, a well-known travel website, released "the most popular cities during the 2009 Spring Festival Golden Week holiday" ranking, announcing the "top 10 tourist departure cities" and the "top 10 tourist arrival cities" on January 31 in Shanghai.

According to the survey, the top 10 tourist departure cities were Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Chengdu, Xiamen, Wuhan and Qingdao. The most popular tourist departure cities generally show economic strength and great consumption capacity, an increasing number of white-collar workers and huge enthusiasm of its citizens for travelling.

The top 10 tourist arrival cities were Beijing, Hong Kong, Sanya, Xiamen, Shanghai, Harbin, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Hangzhou and Chengdu. These cities generally have the characteristics of established tourism destinations: beautiful natural sceneries, rich cultural resources, convenient shopping and developed tourism-supporting facilities.

The survey of the most popular tourism cities for this Spring Festival revealed a trend: these cities are generally located in the northern and southern parts of the country. Southern cities like Sanya and Xiamen, with warm sunshine and beaches, and northern cities such as Harbin, which boasts spectacular scenery of ice and snow as well as ski parks, are all very popular. Meanwhile, Hong Kong continues to be a preferred destination of residents from large and medium sized cities of Chinese mainland during the Golden Week holiday. The survey covers altogether 40 major cities in China.
