Lured by year-round sunshine, a unique culture and easy access from the UK, Malta is a fashionable Mediterranean-island to escape to. This hidden gem is gaining popularity in the American market. This year, Malta was named #3 on the New York Times’ “52 Places to Go in 2016” List, as well as named #1 in Lonely Planet Magazine’s Fall 2016 issue, “25 Travel Secrets.”

Whether couples are interested in culture and history, or prefer to bask in the Mediterranean sun, Malta is a hidden gem, where outdoor weddings under the stars are the norm. Maltese weddings may have changed from days gone by, when a pot of sweets displayed on the wall of a girl’s house meant her parents were seeking a suitor, (followed by the young man sending a fish with a gold ring in its mouth). However joyous music, feasting and dancing into the wee hours remain.

Villa Corinthia in Corinthia Palace Hotel & Spa

Confirming its heritage for weddings and connection to Britain and royalty, it was in 1962 when the Pisani family initially launched Corinthia Palace as a wedding venue and restaurant, officially opening as a hotel in June 1968, in the presence of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh and actor Sir Roger Moore. Inaugurating the royal connection to Malta, HM Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh lived on the island as newlyweds before The Queen’s accession to the throne, and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary there, with HRH Prince William visiting Malta a few years later in 2014 to honor the country’s 50th anniversary of independence. In November 2015, The Queen attended a dinner at Corinthia Palace Hotel & Spa during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. Joined by dignitaries and members of the royal family, The Queen was served a three-course meal prepared by the Hotel’s Executive Chef, Stefan Hogan and his team.

With an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, award-winning spa and recently refurbished suites, the property was originally built around an elegant 19thcentury villa. Offering views of the President’s Palace and glorious San Anton Gardens, the Hotel is also a gateway for guests to discover the historical heart of Malta. 7,000 years of East-meets-West history are easy to explore from Corinthia Palace Hotel & Spa; three charming villages, as well as the medieval city of Mdina and the cultural center of Valletta are a few minutes’ drive away. Wow-inspiring shopping and golfing adventures; or simply relaxing on the beach can be enjoyed via the Hotel’s courtesy transfer service.

Welcoming guests from around the world to say ‘I do’ in style, the Hotel’s wedding team are craftsmen in their field, tailoring each occasion to the couple’s needs and budget. Essentially acting as their personal ‘Equerry’, the wedding team can arrange pre-wedding spa treatments whilst offering couples exclusive access to some of the best Maltese wedding dress designers, hair stylists, florists, interior designers, vehicles for the occasion, suggestions for bands, DJs and more; crafting their special day to royal perfection.

Flying Corinthia’s flag for enduring culinary excellence, the Hotel’s Executive Chef, Stefan Hogan is renowned for his inspirational creations. Having worked with the Corinthia Group for over 20 years, Chef Hogan has catered for every type of wedding imaginable and revels in personalizing each couple’s needs: “Every wedding is so different and it’s such a personal journey, both for the couple and for us in the kitchen. I like to get to know the couples and to listen to what they have in mind for their big day. Some of my best inspiration comes from hearing their stories about their relationship, or their dreams for the future”.
