Kenyan tourism loses 31 mln eur as 90 pct of Jan hotel bookings cancelled

Jan 09, 2008

NAIROBI - The nationwide unrest following disputed presidential elections last month is hitting Kenya's tourism sector, with 90 pct of hotel bookings for January having been cancelled, the country's tourism office said.

The cancellations represent a loss of 31 mln eur this month, part of the touristic high season.

Rose Kwena of the tourism office said the political crisis is having a substantial impact, and that for a week now, there have been practically no arrivals in Kenya.

In Jan 2007, 99.602 tourists visited the country, and Kenya saw 1.8 mln visitors during the whole year, Kwena said.
