Residential complexes, embassies evacuated after WWII bomb found in Berlin

Aug 26, 2016

BERLIN, Germany - In Berlin the construction worker found a WWII bomb on Gotland street near Bornholmer Straße and Schönhauser Allee. To defuse it, a blocking perimeter of 1,000 meters has been set up.

Several large residential complexes, embassies and a nursing home have to be evacuated. Several thousand people have been affected, a police spokesman said on Friday night.

The 100-kilogram Russian ordnance was found at noon in the Gotland street. Initially around 100 officers were deployed.

The tram lines M1, M13 and M50 as well as the underground line U2 lead through the trap circuit. Their traffic should only be stopped when specialists lend a hand to the bomb, said the police spokesman.
