Information from a regular aviation source in Dar es Salaam suggests that the Moroni/Comoros-based AB Aviation has launched twice weekly flights between the islands and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s commercial capital.

The privately owned airline presently operates two Embraer 120 turboprop aircraft and one Boeing B737 with Moroni as its hub. From there does AB serve a total of 6 destinations, including Anjouan and Moheli on the domestic network but also Pamandzi / Mayotte, Pemba in Mozambique and a second airport on Madagascar, Amborovy Airport in Majunga.

The new flights will reportedly connect directly out of Moroni to the Madagascar capital of Antananarivo, providing the fastest link between Tanzania and Madagascar.

Present at the launch over the weekend was the Minister for Tourism of Madagascar, the Hon. Ratsiraka, who expressed his hope that the new connection will spur tourism exchanges and also support trade between the Indian Ocean’s largest island and Tanzania.

Madagascar is part of the Indian Ocean Vanilla Island organization and flight links like this to the African mainland will be of keen interest to that grouping too as it widens the network of connections between and to the islands.
