KAHULUI, Maui, HI — Key Ingredients: America by Food, a renowned Smithsonian traveling art exhibition, will be on display at the University of Hawaii – Maui Community College (UH-Maui CC) campus from February 14 through April 11, marking the first time a Smithsonian exhibition has ever been displayed at UH-Maui CC. Key Ingredients explores the connections between Americans and the foods they produce, prepare, preserve, and present at the table. It is the newest exhibit of Museum on Main Street, a partnership of the Smithsonian Institution and state humanities councils in service to museums and citizens of rural America.

Through a selection of artifacts, photographs, and illustrations, Key Ingredients examines the evolution of the American kitchen and how food industries have responded to technological innovations that have allowed Americans to make selections from an ever-growing variety of processed and fresh foods. Key Ingredients also looks beyond the home to the restaurants, diners, and celebrations that help build a sense of community through food. The exhibition’s Maui stop will also feature a display by The Sustainable Living Institute of Maui and Maui Community College on food sustainability.

An interactive Web site, www.keyingredients.org , has been developed in conjunction with the exhibition. The site invites people across the country to share their family recipes and food stories, learn about other food traditions, and identify favorite small-town eateries. It also offers the public, particularly inhabitants of rural communities, a convenient forum for sharing their recipes, traditions, and family stories.

Key Ingredients will be open to the public from February 14 through April 11 in the Ka’a’ike building lobby on the UH-Maui CC campus in Kahului. Public hours are from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday and 10:00 am until 2:00 pm on Saturday. The exhibition will be closed on Sunday. Admission is free. Tours are also available for school and community groups. If you would like to set up a tour, contact Dorothy Tolliver at [email protected] . Slots are limited so book early in order to ensure availability. General questions regarding the exhibition can be answered by calling 808-984-3500.
