The Miss Seychelles…another world 2016 beauty pageant was held at the International Conference Centre of Seychelles on May 28.
The prize-giving ceremony was attended by the Minister for Tourism and Culture, Alain St.Ange; Principal Secretary for Tourism Anne Lafortune; Chief Executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board (STB) Sherin Naiken; and Deputy Chief Executive Nathalie Didon.
Seychelles Tourism Board staff and the other contestants, as well as sponsors of this year’s beauty pageant, were also present for the prize-giving ceremony.
Other than the top winners, all the contestants have received a perfume gift pack sponsored by the Seychelles Trading Company; beauty cosmetics products from My Hair Affection Seychelles; “I Love Seychelles” t-shirts from Red Coral; three months of free membership sponsored X Trim Fitness and Wellness Centre; tickets for a one-year membership and eco-beach bags from Eden Aquarium; one hamper from East Indies; t-shirts from GAP Events, PR and Communications company; a framed souvenir group photograph from Advance Design & Printing; and a bouquet of flowers from the Tourism Board.
Speaking at the event, Miss Naiken said all 12 contestants are winners, as they had the courage to come forward and be part of the Miss Seychelles…another world 2016 journey.
“You must have come out with new skills, experiences, and friendships. You have been able to stand public pressures and criticism,” she said.
Miss Naiken described the negative comments about the contestants made on social media were very harsh and inhumane.
“Do not let these negative comments get to you. You are all beautiful and courageous Seychellois ladies. Be proud of having joined the journey,” she added.
Miss Naiken thanked the many sponsors coming from the private sector trade, adding that the Tourism Board is grateful for all the support received. She also echoed words of thanks to the team at the Tourism Board for their hard work.
On his part, Minister St.Ange said it is good to see that Seychelles, as small as it is, can stage a beauty pageant with a purpose. “Today, we can announce that the private sector trade has come forward to further encourage our future contestants and that as from 2017, Miss Seychelles…another world will be receiving 10,000 monthly rupees (US$761) for the duration of her reign as her allowance,” Minister Alain St.Ange said.
He also spoke about the negative and derogatory comments aired after this year’s pageant which he said is a shame for the country.
Minister St.Ange said that as a people, Seychellois come from five branches, and this must be respected and appreciated. “Our Miss Seychelles is elected immaterial of the color of her skin, and immaterial of her religious belief, political affiliation, or sexual preference. This is Seychelles,” the Minister said.
“We need to realize that each and every one of us counts, everyone has dignity, and this we should respect. We are all equal, and we should all be treated equally,” Minister Alain St.Ange added.
To the 12 contestants, Minister St.Ange said: “You are all winners, as you have been able to come forward, unlike those who sit at home to criticize and will never win anything.” He added that the Tourism Board continues to count on the private sector trade, the airlines partners, and the business community to keep working together for Seychelles so that the country can make Miss Seychelles…another world 2016 an ambassador of the country.
