Testing, testing: Rwanda’s new national convention and exhibition center

Prof. Dr. Wolfgang H. Thome, eTN Africa Correspondent  Jun 12, 2016

Rwanda's new national convention and exhibition center and the adjoining Radisson Blu Hotel Kigali is ready for a test and will be at the heart of meetings, accommodation, and banquets by mid-July of this year, increasing the country’s MICE infrastructure in a huge way.

The new facility is at the very core of Rwanda's drive to capture a larger portion of the MICE business and with new hotels opening in the fall, additional bedrooms in the top market segment will allow for larger conferences, meetings, and conventions in the Rwandan capital.

In the finishing stages is the Kigali Marriott Hotel, the Ramada in Kigali, and Starwood Hotels which has confirmed that they will enter the Rwandan market with their Sheraton brand.

This expansion drive goes hand in hand with what is happening at the national airline, RwandAir, which is due to take delivery of yet another Boeing B737-800NG before the first of two Airbus A330s will join the fleet in September. At that stage, both Mumbai, via Dar es Salaam, and Guangzhou will be added to the network.

The article image shows a night-time impression of the new hotel and convention center complex, taken from a helicopter a few days ago, which is located just a 15 minutes’ drive from the international airport near Rwanda's Parliament building.
