Grenada enforcing ban on off-beach bathing suits

By AP | Jan 11, 2009

ST. GEORGE'S, Grenada — Bikini and Speedo-clad tourists beware.

The Caribbean island of Grenada says it recently began enforcing an indecent exposure law banning bathing suits away from the beach, as well as saggy pants that reveal the underwear.

Police commissioner James Clarkson says violators are usually just ordered to cover up. But the law allows for a $270 fine or six months in jail.

At least a few locals are contesting fines.

Clarkson said Friday that cruise ships usually inform passengers of proper non-beach attire, but "from time to time, there is the one or two who take their chances."

He said a few months ago police ordered several tourists wearing swimwear at a fort to return to their cruise ship and put on some clothes.

The Island of Grenada obviously has some issue and realities with which the leadership must come to grips.

They need to go to school to understand and learn how to be successful in business and tourism. The terms 'User Friendly' and 'The Customer Ultimately is always right.' Even if the customer is wrong we have to find a way to make them right. The customer is the reason we are all in business.

Allot of these Caribbean island nations are steeped in the pride of some misbegotten notions of Old world Colonialism. There is a moronic clinging to values and traditions of the Slave Cultures, which oppressed their ancestors; values which are no longer held in reverence in the culture of the countries, against whom there ancestors fought against for the freedom they now enjoy and in some cases take for granted.

I agree with the previous commenter. There are definitely other islands in the Caribbean which are much more User Friendly, Open Minded, Interesting and Exciting. The food is most likely nothing special either. As is the case with the island of Aruba, have you ever heard of a Grenadian restaurant anywhere? At least Aruba has Casinos night life and topless permitted. beaches.

I visited Grenada a couple of months back for the first time. The entire time I was wondering...what do they have here to offer visitors which is unique to this island? I could think of nothing special. Many other islands in the Caribbean could offer the same things. And the incessant harassment from those wanting something from you while trying to explore the destination was so tedious - I gave up before I was ready. If they wish to be even more inhospitable to visitors in a climate that calls for light clothing - why bother going there? There are so many great destinations in the world...even the Caribbean. Why make such an effort to go to an island steeped in poverty, where you're harassed when you walk down the street and despite their issues and problems - ones clothing is an issue of major importance. Pass on Grenada... there's nothing of great value to make it a worthy destination.
