FestPac celebrating Pacific Island Cultures: Visitors to Guam in for a treat

Guam Tourism with FestPac puts the Blue Continent in the global spotlight

The blue continent is in the spotlight of the world today, and the center is the American island of Guam. It's a cultural and tourism event only happening every 4 years and of a very special nature.

Today is the opening of FestPac. FestPac is a celebration of cultures. Attending are a wide range of cultural groups and nationalities from Polynesia, Melanesia, and Micronesia in the Pacific Ocean.

It will showcase the family oriented lifestyle, characterized by a solidified community. Visitors from around the globe will learn and experience cultures and customs as well as traditions based on ancient principles that promote honor and nobility. Traditional music, dance, food, storytelling, music along with art will be found at the 12th festival of Pacific Arts which will open today.

Participating countries and islands are:

American Samoa
American Samoa's islands are located in the heart of the Polynesian, with Hawaii, Rapanui (Easter Island) and New Zealand making up the three points of the Polynesian triangle.

Australia is a country, and continent, surrounded by the Indian and Pacific oceans. Its major cities – Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide – are coastal, but its capital, Canberra, is inland and nicknamed the "Bush Capital".

Cook Islands
The Cook Islands, the South Pacific archipelago nation, lies southwest of Tahiti.

Easter Island
Easter Island, a Chilean territory, is a remote volcanic island in Polynesia. icon--It'med for its archaeological sites, including some 900 monumental statues, called moai, created by its early Rapa Nui inhabitants during the 10th-16th centuries.

Federated States of Micronesia
The Federated States of Micronesia is an independent sovereign island nation and a United States associated state consisting of four states – from west to east, Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae – that are spread across the Western Pacific Ocean.

Fiji Islands
Fiji, a country in the South Pacific, is an archipelago of more than 300 islands.

French Polynesia
French Polynesia, an overseas collectivity of France, comprises 118 dispersed islands in the South Pacific, stretching for more than 2,000km.

Guam (2016 Host)
The Festival of the Pacific Arts is held every four years since 1972, and brings together artists and cultural practitioners from around the Pacific region for two weeks of festivity.

Hawaii, a U.S. state, is an isolated volcanic archipelago in the Central Pacific.

Kiribati, an island republic in the Central Pacific, comprises 33 coral atolls stretching along the equator.

Marshall Islands
The Marshall Islands, officially the Republic of the Marshall Islands, is an island country located near the equator in the Pacific Ocean, slightly west of the International Date Line.

Nauru, officially the Republic of Nauru and formerly known as Pleasant Island, is an island country in Micronesia in the Central Pacific.

New Caledonia
New Caledonia, a French territory comprising dozens of islands in the South Pacific, is known for its palm-lined beaches and marine-life-rich lagoon, which, at 24,000-sq.-km, is among the world's largest.

New Zealand
New Zealand is a country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean consisting of 2 main islands, both marked by volcanoes and glaciation. Capital Wellington, on the North Island, is home to Te Papa Tongarewa, the expansive national museum.

Niue is an island country in the South Pacific Ocean, 2,400 kilometres northeast of New Zealand within the triangle formed by Tonga to the west, Samoa to the north, and the Cook Islands to the east.

Norfolk Island
Norfolk Island is a small island in the Pacific Ocean located between Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia, 1,412 kilometres directly east of mainland Australia's Evans Head, and about 900 kilometres from Lord Howe Island.

Northern Mariana Islands
The Northern Mariana Islands, officially the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, is one of five inhabited American insular areas.

Palau is an archipelago of more than 500 islands, part of the Micronesia region in the western Pacific Ocean, well known for its scuba-diving and snorkeling sites.

Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea, in the southwestern Pacific, encompasses the eastern half of New Guinea and its offshore islands.

Pitcairn Islands

Republic of China (Taiwan)
Republic of China (Taiwan) is an island located in Pacific Ocean which comprises 16 indigenous tribes and other ethnic groups.

Samoa is an independent nation comprising the westernmost group of the Samoan Islands, in Polynesia.

Solomon Islands
The Solomon Islands, a nation of hundreds of islands in the South Pacific, is known for its scuba diving and WWII-era relics.

Tokelau /'toʊkəlaʊ/ is a territory of New Zealand in the South Pacific Ocean that consists of three tropical coral atolls with a combined land area of 10 km² and a population of approximately 1,400.

Tonga is a Polynesian kingdom of more than 170 islands, many uninhabited, most lined in white beaches and coral reefs and covered with tropical rainforest.

Tuvalu, formerly known as the Ellice Islands, is a Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean, midway between Hawaii and Australia.

Vanuatu is a South Pacific Ocean nation made up of roughly 80 islands that stretch 1,300 kilometers.

Wallis and Futuna
Wallis and Futuna, is a French island collectivity in the South Pacific between Tuvalu to the northwest, Rotuma of Fiji to the west, the main part of Fiji to the southwest, Tonga to the southeast, Samoa to the east, the New Zealand territory of Tokelau to the northeast and to a more distant north the Phoenix Islands (Kiribati).
