KINGSTON, Jamaica – Jamaica’s Minister of Tourism Edmund Bartlett is set to participate in a high level symposium being hosted by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) to explore ways to further encourage sustainable tourism practices across the globe.

This as Minister Bartlett is currently enroute to Abidjan, Cรดte dโ€™Ivoire to attend the 58TH Meeting of the Commission for Africa and the 10 Year Framework of Programs Sustainable Tourism Conference & Symposium on Accelerating the Shift towards Sustainable Consumption and Production Patterns (SCP). The meeting will be held from April 19 to 21, 2016.

Minister Bartlett, who also chairs the Board of Affiliate Members of the UNWTO, left the island on April 17. He outlined that โ€œthe conference forms part of ongoing efforts by the UNWTO to encourage its members to support the global drive to make fundamental changes in the way nations produce and consume goods and services. This is critical to fostering sustainable development overall.โ€

The goal of ensuring sustainable consumption and production focuses on the responsible use of services and related products in a manner, which while addressing basic needs and facilitating a better quality of life minimizes the use of natural resources and toxic materials. Additionally it seeks to reduce the emission of waste and pollutants over the life cycle of the service or product to avoid jeopardizing the needs of further generations.

Minister Bartlett is slated to return to the island on Saturday April 23, 2016.
