NTTO: US-international air passenger traffic a record 209.1 million in 2015

WASHINGTON, DC - International air traffic to/from the US totaled 209.1 million passengers in 2015, a six percent increase over 2014.

U.S. citizen travel (93.4 million) was up eight percent and comprised 45 percent of all air traffic, increasing market share. Non-U.S. citizen air travelers (115.7 million) increased by four percent with their market share at 55 percent.

U.S. airlines carried 104.6 million passengers, up two percent, with their share at 50 percent, down from 2014. Foreign flags carried 104.5 million passengers, up 10 percent from 2014.

The following, overseas, Canada and Mexico regions are ‘breakouts’ of international:

Overseas air traffic accounted for 154.7 million passengers, 74 percent of all international, and grew by six percent in 2015.
U.S. citizen travel (68.6 million) was up six percent composing 44 percent of overseas air traffic. Non-U.S. citizen air travel (86.0 million) was up by five percent with their market share almost 56 percent.

U.S. airlines carried 73.9 million passengers, up two percent, their share at 48 percent. Foreign flags carried 80.8 million passengers, up nine percent from 2014.

Estimated capacity (334,783 seats) on inbound flights was up 21 percent year-over-year in December, less than 23.9 percent passenger growth.

Chinese carriers increased average weekly frequencies from 106 to 143, up 35 percent.

U.S. carriers increased average weekly frequencies from 110 to 123, up 12 percent.

The Gulf carrier passenger share was 2.6% of all international passenger traffic to/from the U.S., up from 2.1% during 2014. Over 2.8 million passengers were inbound to the U.S. of which 1.7 million were foreign travelers.

North American markets accounted for 26 percent of U.S. international air traffic flows.

Canadian air traffic accounted for 28.2 million passengers, 14 percent of all international traffic, and increased by three percent.
U.S. citizen travel (8.2 million) increased nine percent and composed 29 percent of air traffic. Canadian, and other foreign national citizen air travelers transiting through Canada (20.0 million), remained flat. Market share declined to 71 percent.

U.S. flags carried 11.7 million passengers, down five percent from 2014, with their share at almost 42 percent. Foreign flags carried 16.5 million passengers, up nine percent, increasing market share.

Mexico air traffic accounted for 26.2 million passengers, 13 percent of all international traffic, and was up almost13 percent.

U.S. citizen travel (16.6 million) increased 16 percent and comprised 63 percent of air traffic. Mexicans, and other foreign national air travelers (9.6 million) transiting through Mexico, increased by eight percent, with market share 37 percent.

U.S. flags carried 19.0 million passengers, up nine percent from 2014, however their share slipped to 73 percent. Foreign flags carried 7.2 million passengers, up 24 percent increasing share to almost 28 percent.
