A tourist visiting from Minnesota man who had been surfing by pier in Hanalei Bay on the island of Kauai in Hawaii was bit as he was paddling his way back to shore. Although he did not see it, the man believes it was a shark that bit him this afternoon at around 2 pm.
Lifeguards said he had lacerations on both of his hands, which fortunately were not life-threatening. The tourist chose to drive himself to a medical facility to have his hands checked out.
Erring on the side of safety, “Shark Sighted” and “No Swimming” signs were posted, and the state Department of Land and Natural Resources was notified. Officials will assess the water tomorrow morning, Friday, January 29, to make a determination on whether it is safe for people to return to the Hanalei Bay waters.
