The Nature Island of the Caribbean has emerged strong from the tropical storm that hit the island in late August 2015. Beginning with Carnival 2016, Dominica is celebrating the New Year with the adventure traveler in mind with exciting events and developments, including:

Dominica Readies for Carnival 2016!

Dominica is abuzz with activities for Carnival 2016, leading up to a crescendo of excitement on Feb. 8 & 9. Dominica’s Carnival, also known as Mas Domnik, The Real Mas, is the island’s most festive season. With a theme of, “Spirit of the Real Mas,” the 2016 celebration offers highlights that include a full array of calypso competitions, pageants, parades and jump-up, a type of exciting street dance!

Air Travel Update: Night Landings Resume; New Flight Options

The Nature Island continues to rebound following the tropical storm from August 2015. Night landings have been restored at Douglas-Charles Airport (DOM). With the resumption of night landing service, LIAT announced a new daily service between Dominica and Antigua (ANU), allowing travelers additional options that accommodate same day connections to the Nature Island.

In addition, Norwegian Airlines recently introduced flights between the French West Indies and three Eastern seaboard gateway cities, allowing visitors to get to Dominica with just one short flight and a ferry ride. Flights are available between Martinique’s Aimé Césaire International Airport (FDF) or Guadeloupe’s Le Raizet Airport (PTP) and New York (JFK), Boston (BOS), and Baltimore/Washington (BWI).

From the French West Indies, travelers can access regular connections into Dominica by air and sea. L’Express Des Iles offers ferry services into Roseau six days weekly from both Martinique and Guadeloupe, with four return connections from each. Winair offers a regular return flight four times weekly between Guadeloupe and Dominica’s Douglas-Charles Airport. LIAT has one flight to Guadeloupe from Douglas-Charles Airport three times weekly.

Both Winair and LIAT have begun service into Dominica’s Canefield Airport (DCF), LIAT flies from Antigua seven times weekly and Winair from St. Maarten (SXM) three times weekly. Visitors now have additional flights and a choice of which airport to land in the Nature Isle.

Dominica Among World’s Best Ethical Destinations for the Fifth Time!

For the fifth time, Dominica was named to the World’s Ten Best Ethical Destinations by Ethical Traveler. The prestigious honor recognized that the Nature Island leads the Caribbean in the development of geothermal electricity and serves as a model to other Caribbean nations in health care. Other key points include the island’s literacy rate of 94 percent, and wildlife conservation initiatives, specifically for sea turtles and whales, along with other marine life. Dominica also achieved this honor for 2015, 2014, 2012 and 2011.

2016 Turtle Season March to October

The Nature Island is getting ready to welcome visitors for the start of the annual sea turtle season. Beginning in March, visitors arrive from around the world to witness sea turtles as they come ashore to lay their eggs. Hatching can begin as early as June and take place into October. Dominica’s sea turtle conservation initiatives have been cited by Ethical Traveler in its recognition of the island as a top ethical destination.

Visitors are invited to assist in patrolling the beach and helping the turtle team collect data. Rosalie Bay Resort is once again offering its Guaranteed Sea Turtle Package.

Dominica Welcomes New Hotel Developments

New hotel developments are underway in Dominica by both Kempinski and Hilton hotels. The Cabrits Resort Kempinski Dominica is slated to be the company’s first luxury hotel project in Dominica. The 160-room hotel is being built on the north shore of the island, close to the town of Portsmouth and adjacent to the Cabrits National Park. It is set to open in 2018. Hilton plans to bring its Curio Collection to Dominica in 2018. The Tranquility Beach Resort Dominica, Curio Collection by Hilton, will offer 73 rooms, a spa, gym, restaurant and conference facilities. The resort is being built on the west coast of the Nature Island near Salisbury.
