SEATTLE, WA – The second annual Seattle Museum Month, February 1-29, kicks off with a common refrain from regional hoteliers and cultural institutions: “Gray is just our backdrop.”

Seattle’s February forecast may be unappealing, but the region’s hospitality community wants travelers to know that it’s the perfect month to enjoy the region’s rich cultural institutions.

Seattle Museum Month makes it easy and affordable for guests at 59 downtown Seattle hotels to access 50 percent discounts at participating museums โ€“ and that includes several of the region’s most noteworthy 2016 exhibitions.

The U.S. premiere of Louis Kahn: The Power of Architecture runs throughout February at the Bellevue Arts Museum and is included in the Seattle Museum Month program, as is the first large-scale Hello Kitty museum retrospective in the U.S., which is on display at Seattle’s EMP Museum.

At the center of Seattle Art Museum, Kehinde Wiley: A New Republic opens February 11 and at the Seattle Aquarium, Octopus Week, February 14-22, beckons the whole family. The Wing Luke of the Asian Pacific American Experience is the only museum outside of Hong Kong to present an in-depth Bruce Lee exhibit. Do you Know Bruce? Breaking Barriers enters its second year and digs deeper into the global icon’s impact with the support of Linda and Shannon Lee.

Two internationally renowned glass art museums are included in Seattle Museum Month – Chihuly Garden and Glass in Seattle and the Museum of Glass in Tacoma. LeMay America’s Car Museum in Tacoma and the USS Turner Joy in Bremerton are also included in the program.
Other major museums returning to the program this year include the Museum of History & Industry, Museum of Flight, Woodland Park Zoo, Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture and the Northwest African American Museum. Some new participating museums include the Living Computer Museum, Seattle Pinball Museum and Pacific Bonsai Museum.
A number of participating museums โ€“ including some with regularly free admission โ€“ will also offer films, lectures, tours and other special programming during Seattle Museum Month.

Seattle Museum Month is produced by Visit Seattle and funded by the Seattle Tourism Improvement Area (STIA), a dedicated marketing fund assessed from guests at the 59 downtown Seattle hotels. Seattle Museum Month is present in many different types of media including digital, social, Out of Home (OOH) and movie trailers. The program is targeting key markets of eastern Washington, Portland, Vancouver, B.C., Denver, San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland.

The program goal is to increase hotel room nights as well as museum attendance during the month of February. Additionally, the program’s marketing exposure is expected to have a long-term positive business impact for participating organizations and the region.

Visit Seattle thanks 4Culture, the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture and STQRY for supporting Seattle Museum Month.
