Students graduating from the Seychelles Tourism Academy (STA) will now be able to work on the tankers of the Seychelles Petroleum Company Limited (Seypec) as cooks and stewards.

This is now possible thanks to a memorandum of understanding signed between the STA and Seypec.

The accord was signed by the Principal of STA, Flavien Joubert, and Seypecโ€™s Chief Executive, Conrad Benoiton, recently at the academy.

Present at the ceremony were the Minister for Tourism and Culture, Alain St.Ange; Principal Secretary for Tourism, Anne Lafortune; Deputy Chief Executive of the Seychelles Tourism Board, Nathalie Didon; Chairperson of STAโ€™s Board of Governance, John Stravens; as well as management staff of the academy and Seypec, and trade partners.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr. Joubert thanked the petroleum company for the initiative, adding that it has come at a right time, because now apart from opportunities to work in hotels and airline companies, students will now be able to work at sea – starting on tankers – and in the future they can seek other avenues such as on cruise liners.

Mr. Benoiton said Seypecโ€™s will continue to collaborate with the academy so as to establish and develop greater academic exchange and cooperation in human resources development and capacity building, which in return will lead to more qualified Seychellois chief cooks onboard the tankers of Seychelles.

Minister St.Ange thanked Seypec for this initiative, and commended both parties for formalizing this agreement.

He added that by working together, students can benefit through vast opportunities that will arise.

โ€œWorking together always brings added benefits for our people and country. What is happening through this agreement will open even more doors for our young graduates. Such an opening on tankers is not new, and one should be reminded of the era when British tankers, such as the Ennerdale and Dewdale, came to Seychelles,โ€ he said.

Among their crew members were Seychelles seamen and kitchen personnel, he added.

โ€œI commend Seypec and the Seychelles Tourism Academy for this latest spirit of cooperation which will bring openings for our very own people. Our young graduates today have more opportunities than ever before, but it is them alone who can decide to benefit from all the opportunities put at their disposal. Success comes only through hard work and perseverance,” said Minister St.Ange.
