TAIPEI, Taiwan – Eric Chu, chairman and presidential candidate of the ruling Kuomintang (KMT), said Saturday he will boost Taiwan’s tourism if he is elected president next January.

Speaking at a supporter’s club organized by the tourism industry, Chu pledged to improve the country’s tourism promotion to bring in 20 million foreign visitors a year.

Taiwan’s biggest change in recent years has been the development of its tourism, Chu said, adding the tourism sector is a job-creator that can give a much needed boost to the flagging domestic economy.

Under the administration of President Ma Ying-jeou, foreign visitor arrivals have climbed to 10 million per year, a figure that is expected to be attained by Dec. 23, compared with an average 3 million annually when the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) was in power, he said.

However, Taiwan needs to attract even more visitors, Chu said, adding that he is anticipating the number to one day rise to 30 million a year.
