Official: Reggae Marathon a major boost to Negril’s economy

KINGSTON, Jamaica – President of the Negril Chamber of Commerce, Lee Issa, has lauded the Reggae Marathon as a world-class event that is boosting the resort town’s economy.

“The Reggae Marathon has been a major contributor in filling the rooms which 15 years ago remained empty as we awaited the start of the winter tourist season on December 15. We are pleased that Reggae Marathon is also growing and Negril is ready to accommodate the growth,” said Mr. Issa. The hotelier was the main speaker at the official launch of the Reggae Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K, which took place recently at the Altamont Court Hotel in New Kingston,
The Reggae Marathon is regarded as one of the world’s great destination races and its increasing popularity has significantly enhanced Negril’s international profile as more and more runners add this event to their race calendar. This year’s marathon has seen a record increase of 28% in online registration and some 2500 participants are expected to take part as the race, which is now in its 15th year.

Mr. Issa noted the current boom in hotel construction in Negril, including the refurbishing and expansion of the former Grand Lido Resort and the construction of the 149-rooom Azul Seven. He said that with this expansion the town will be ready to accommodate the growing number of participants turning out for the marathon each year.

Scheduled for Saturday, December 5, the Reggae Marathon will see participants from over 36 countries, including newcomers Saudi Arabia and Suriname. The IAAF certified event is organized by the Jamdammers Running Club of Kingston in association with the Jamaica Tourist Board.

It is scheduled to begin at 5:15 am at Long Bay Beach, situated along Negril’s famed seven-mile white sand beach. It will be followed by the Finish Line Beach Bash, Victory Beach Party and an Awards Ceremony.
