This is according to the Trinidad and Tobago Guardian September 8 report. The party, led by Prime Minister-elect Keith Rowley, won 23 of the country’s 41 constituencies, while the ruling People’s Partnership took 18 seats, despite winning the popular vote.

He pledged to his people: “Our approach to governance in our next term will be data based, scientific, holistic and evidence driven, paying due attention at all times to the need for compassion, sensitivity and the respect for the rights and freedoms of all citizens in all matters of state.”

Outgoing Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar conceded shortly after midnight.

Rowley will be the second Tobago-born prime minister in the twin-island nation’s history.

People in the oil-rich, twin island nation off South America’s northeastern spoke. The new prime minister told reporters: “Our country is in good hands.”
